Dumplings often have a thin skin made from wheat flour or rice flour. They can be boiled, steamed, pan-fried, or deep-fried. Dumplings are one of the most popular dishes in Chinese cuisine, and they come in many different varieties depending on the region where they were created.

Although dumpling recipes vary from region to region, one thing remains constant: all dumplings contain some stuffing wrapped inside the dough to form the shape.

A common type of dumpling in China is the potsticker, a fried or boiled-filled dumpling.

Common filling ingredients are ground pork, cabbage, green onions and scallions, ginger, garlic, and Shaoxing wine.

These ingredients are combined in a light batter and deep-fried to make a thin wrapper.

Vegan zucchini dumplings are a popular dish in many cultures. They are made with a dough filled with vegan ingredients, like zucchini and carrots. The filling is then wrapped into a dumpling shape and cooked in boiling water until they are soft and tender.

Vegan Zucchini Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium zucchinis, grated
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free option)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2430 round dumpling wrappers (vegan and gluten-free if desired)
  • Water for steaming
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated zucchinis, shredded carrots, chopped cabbage, green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce or tamari, sesame oil, rice vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until the ingredients are evenly combined.
  2. Take a dumpling wrapper and place about 1 tablespoon of the vegetable filling in the center. Wet the edges of the wrapper with a little water, then fold it in half and press the edges firmly to seal. You can crimp the edges for an attractive look, if desired. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  3. Prepare a steamer by bringing water to a boil in the bottom pot. Line the steamer basket with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking. Arrange the dumplings in the steamer, leaving some space between each to prevent them from sticking together.
  4. Place the steamer basket over the boiling water and cover with a lid. Steam the dumplings for about 12-15 minutes, or until the wrappers become translucent and the filling is cooked through.
  5. Carefully remove the dumplings from the steamer and transfer them to a serving plate. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired.
  6. Serve the vegan zucchini dumplings hot, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauce such as soy sauce, tamari, or a homemade dipping sauce with flavors you enjoy.
